Imagine . . . . . . enough space for the layout of your dreams!

Not enough space indoors, then go outside into the garden!

This layout shows just what you can achieve (given a few years hard work digging) using the ready to run, L.G.B. garden railway tracks and superbly engineered locos and rolling stock.

But . . . . . it’s not just the trains . . . . this unique layout in a garden has become (again over the past few years) a miniature town, indeed a complete landscape in miniature!

If you were a giant, or flying in a helicopter, this would be your view of the mountainous landscape of the area surrounding the town of “Two Bridges” (Zweibrücken). They are the dominating feature of the Western end of this huge garden layout. Spanning the tracks of the main, twin stations, and the fast flowing river too, these two magnificent bridges link the mountain railway with the lower railway line running through the valley parallel with the river.

The mountain pass on the far side of the rocky outcrop to the West of the village is closed to road traffic due to the steep side of the valley, but the mountain pass is conquered by the trains. They wind their way up and down the steep gradient by clever use of a spiral loop viaduct made out of the local stone.

The town is served by a twin station, the older, original building serving the preserved line running along the valley floor, whilst the smarter and larger station houses the local ticket office for the Swiss RhB trains, of which there are umpteen in service! These make their way over the mountain pass by way of the circular viaduct. An impressive sight as the trains carefully negotiate the downwards spiral, and apply full power to clamber up the steep climb over the pass.

Of course, “Zweibrücken” is an old railway town, hence the local government grant towards the preserved line, which has the original loco depot and carriage sidings with its magnificent turntable still in service. Behind the carriage sidings, the old Bay-Wa warehouse with its silver silos is still in operation, although now rented out to local transport companies. High above the sidings, the water tower still holds the many gallons of water to feed the thirsty steam engines still hard at work!

Just down the road, with its half-timbered houses and shops, is the old family company, which originally gave the townspeople employment – the old timber yard, still in operation driven by an old-fashioned water wheel, slowly rotating to reflect the pace of work still carried out by the grandson of the first sawmill owner.

The high level castle (now haunted by the ghost of a once furious black knight) towering over the scene, was once the family retreat of the local baron, but is now sadly in a ruinous state, but still visited by tourists. How do the tourists get there?

By train of course! This time, a rack and pinion railway handles the tortuous climb up the mountain to arrive alongside the hotel just below the castle tower.

The view from the tower is magnificent, particularly when night falls over the scene. There are hundreds of tiny street lights illuminating the town, and gradually each room lights up as the residents sit down to a comfy evening in front of the TV!

As the nightlife of Zweibrücken gathers pace, the local bars gradually fill up with evening diners, whilst just round the corner (under the viaduct) another type of business is gathering momentum with furtive visits from the gentlemen of the town!

This huge miniature landscape is exquisitely detailed (as is the way when Robin Stanbury builds a layout) so that it’s not just any railway, but a masterpiece of miniature landscaping in the not so small G scale, garden railways of L.G.B.
